Members of a number of North Woods communities competed and placed quite high recently at the Wisconsin Horseshoe Pitchers Association (WHPA) State Singles Championships hosted at Marathon Park in Wausau.
The WHPA is a nonprofit organization created solely for the promotion of organized horseshoe pitching in the State of Wisconsin.
Blake Benzing was crowned champion of the Junior Boys Division, going a perfect 5-0 in the tourney. Out of 174 total shoes thrown, he tossed an impressive 85 ringers (48.85%). Also placing in that division was Bradley Benzing, who was second. He threw a total of 218 shoes with 77 ringers (35.32%). He was 4-1 in the event.
Susie Erickson of Eagle River was first place in the Women’s Class A Division. She was 5-0 on the weekend, tossing an impressive 49.2% ringers, or 123 out of 250 shoes tossed.
Tonya Kaulum was a champion in the Women’s Class B Division. She tossed a record of 4-1, and out of 250 shoes thrown had 100 ringers (40%).
Cliff Erickson of Eagle River also took part in the event, tossing in the Elders Championship Division and placing fifth overall. He was 6-5 overall, tossing an impressive 52.69% ringers (274 of 520) across the weekend.
Michael Benzing, Jr., placed fourth in the Men’s Class B Division. He was 4-3 overall on the weekend, finishing with a 36.07% ringer percentage (101 of 280).
