Northland Pines School District observes Fire Prevention Week, reminding students to stay safe

Posted

The Northland Pines School District recently celebrated Fire Prevention Week, highlighting the importance of fire safety and prevention with engaging activities for students.

This year’s theme, “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work for You!” provided the foundation for educating students on life-saving safety measures.

At Eagle River Elementary, the Eagle River Fire Department (ERFD) partnered with the school to deliver interactive lessons across all grade levels.

Students in 4K had an exciting opportunity to visit the Eagle River Fire Station, learning firsthand how a fire department operates. In a relaxed and friendly environment, they got to know the firefighters, which is important should they ever encounter them in an emergency situation.

The ERFD also brought the Fire Safety House to the school, where K-4 students practiced vital skills like checking doors for heat and learning to “get low and get out” safely. Fifth graders delved into the science of fire and even had the chance to practice using fire extinguishers under the guidance of ERFD firefighters.

At Land O’ Lakes Elementary, students participated in engaging in fire safety activities led by Fire Chief Sam Otterpohl. On Oct. 8, students explored a real fire engine brought to the school by the Land O’ Lakes Fire Department.

The following day, the Eagle River Fire Department arrived with their Fire Safety House, allowing 4K-4th grade students to practice evacuating a simulated home environment when the fire alarms sounded.

At St. Germain Elementary and the Northland Pines Montessori Learning Center, the St. Germain Fire Department visited, bringing fire trucks and equipment to show students how firefighters combat fires.

The visit also helped students become familiar with firefighters in their full gear, reducing fear in emergency situations. Each class received lessons on fire safety procedures at home, helping to extend the important safety lessons beyond the classroom.

The district’s Fire Prevention Week offered students an invaluable opportunity to learn about fire safety in a hands-on, engaging way — ensuring they know what to do in case of an emergency, both at school and at home.
