Phelps Historical Museum planning $1.5 million expansion project

Posted

In 2010, the Phelps Historical Museum first opened its doors, welcoming visitors into a space dedicated to learning about the town’s rich past. In 2015, the museum took a bold step forward by securing a loan to expand its vision. In December 2025, it celebrated the satisfaction of that loan and now owns the building on Highway E.

The museum board has invested $57,000 in professional construction plans and is ready to move forward. Expansion is needed to preserve and protect the history of Phelps and the surrounding Northwoods for future generations. The building also needs to meet the growing needs of collections, exhibits and visitors, with historic collections requiring climate-controlled preservation.

The projected cost of the expansion is $1.5 million.

Pauleyn Nystrom, museum president, said while this is a significant undertaking, the lasting impact of the project on the community and surrounding areas will be profound.

“It will preserve our shared heritage, inspire future generations, celebrate the people who built Phelps, honor veterans and local history, create educational opportunities for schools and families, and provide a lasting legacy for residents, seasonal homeowners and future generations,” Nystrom said.

The museum is asking for the community’s support, with a range of gift levels allowing each supporter to contribute in a way that is meaningful and comfortable.

The museum has partnered with the Community Foundation of North Central Wisconsin and the Phelps Area Community Foundation. Donors may choose to make a one-time gift, pledge a contribution over time or establish a legacy gift that will support the museum well into the future.

For more information, contact the museum at 715-545-3012 or stop in during regular hours. The museum is open June through September from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Tuesdays, Fridays and Saturdays, and 4 to 8 p.m. Thursdays.
