Trees for Tomorrow (TFT) will be kicking off this year’s Outdoor Adventures with Tara Lila with a Snowshoe Hike through the Tara Lila Trail System on Saturday, Jan. 18, 2025, from 1 - 4 p.m.
The trek will be filled with tips for identifying animal signs and tracks, along with insights into how animals survive the bitter cold of winter.
Participants will meet at the TFT campus for a brief introduction to animal signs before caravanning to the Ripco Road Unit of Tara Lila. Wooden snowshoes will be provided free of charge, or participants are welcome to bring their own.
The program is recommended for ages 10 and over, and anyone under 18 must be accompanied by an adult. The hike will last approximately 60 to 90 minutes, covering 1 - 2 miles of occasionally uneven terrain.
Restrooms and a water filling station will be available at the TFT campus, and outhouses will be available at the trailhead.
“We are thrilled to return for a second year, partnering with Tara Lila for these programs,” said educator Bethany Heft. “Their trails have been integral to many of our environmental education classes, and working with them for these monthly programs continues to be a perfect fit, especially given their focus on enjoying nature in a quiet and authentic way.”
The 2025 Outdoor Adventure Program at Tara Lila series, co-hosted by TFT, is made possible through a partnership with Tara Lila LLC and a sponsorship from the Aylward family (the landowners and creators of Tara Lila).
Although the program is free, preregistration is required as spaces are limited. No walk-ins will be allowed. Interested individuals can sign up online at treesfortomorrow.com/Current-Activities or by calling the main office at 715-479-6456.
New this year at Tara Lila: For anyone unable to attend this snowshoe hike — or for those looking for a more challenging outdoor experience — Tara Lila is independently hosting a 5k snowshoe race at their Ripco Road Park Unit on Saturday, Feb. 1, 2025.
The race, called the Himanaji Winter Challenge, is named after two Sanskrit words: himana meaning snowy and aji meaning racecourse. Registration costs $20 and is part of Tara Lila’s annual Snowshoe Celebration, a free day of family fun. For more information or to register, visit https://www.taralila.org/events or email the race director, Chris Nafziger, at himanajirace@gmail.com. Proceeds from the race registration goes to Trees For Tomorrow and The Three Eagle Trail Foundation.
