The Sayner Community Church project is carrying on, with concrete being poured earlier this month.
According to Laurie Zaruba, Save the Church Committee, concrete was poured Oct. 6 for the 20- by 30-square foot addition which will include a handicap-accessible restroom and fellowship area.
The church has been jacked up since Aug. 26, and more carpentry work needs to be done before Schuette Movers can begin the letdown process to place the church back down onto the new foundation.
“Our goal is to have all the work done and the church on the new foundation in the next two weeks,” Zaruba said last week. “Volunteers from the Sayner community showed up Wednesday morning (Oct. 15) for a work day to replace rotted floor joists and perform other necessary work.”
The church was built in 1916 and is one of the town’s few remaining historic structures.
To modernize the church for continued use, the committee is raising funds to better insulate the walls and ceiling and improve the windows, lighting and sound system. Eventually, a sidewalk and parking will be added, as well as an outdoor sanctuary and worship space.
Fundraising toward the $180,000 goal is still underway, with $137,000 already raised for the first phase of the project. Donations can be made online at saynercommunitychurch.org or mailed to: Sayner Community Church, PO Box 102, Sayner, WI 54560.
Currently, services are held Sundays at the Plum Lake Town Hall at 10 a.m.
