The largest woodpecker in America with the exception of the rare ivory-billed woodpecker in the south, the pileated woodpecker is listed as uncommon but getting more numerous in the North Woods every year. They are now a common sight in forested backyards, known for their irregular flight and loud calls.—Staff Photo By KURT KRUEGER
